Welcome from The CEO

A warm welcome to The High School Leckhampton, a brand new co-educational comprehensive school that will serve Leckhampton and the surrounding area. This website has been created to give you a brief introduction to the school whilst the main website is under construction.

The High School Leckhampton is being built to cater for an expansion in pupil numbers at secondary level in the south Cheltenham area. The school has been commissioned by Gloucestershire County Council but is being “sponsored” and developed by Balcarras School. Balcarras is a highly successful 11-18 school situated in the heart of the Charlton Kings area of east Cheltenham. Consistently rated outstanding by Ofsted, it has also been recognised by The Sunday Times as the most successful comprehensive school in the South West (2017, 2018 and 2019) and we recently received the prestigious accolade of South West State School of the Decade.

The school will open, to Year 7 pupils only, in September 2021 as a 4 forms of entry school, rising to 5 and then 6 forms of entry with an eventual capacity of 900. In the first year the school will be based at Balcarras, before transferring to state of the art facilities built on a lovely site off Farm Lane in Leckhampton.

When Balcarras wrote our bid to sponsor the school we gave it the title: “A flagship school at the heart of its community”. That is genuinely what we are setting out to achieve. We want The High School Leckhampton to be regarded as one of the finest state schools in the country—a school where children are happy, feel safe and are encouraged not just to do their best academically but to expand their horizons.

CEO The Balcarras Trust

Welcome from The Headteacher

I am absolutely delighted to be taking up the privileged position as the inaugural Headteacher of The High School Leckhampton. Over the coming months our school, which has been in development over many years, will literally take shape and I am very much looking forward to working with The Balcarras Trust, parents and pupils of the founding cohort to build a ‘Flagship school at the heart of its community.’ My ambition is to establish an exceptional school from the very first day.

Our school will be driven by a determination to secure the best educational outcomes for all our pupils, its unrelenting focus on teaching and learning and its commitment to continuous improvement. We will foster a culture of high expectations and academic excellence, where all pupils are inspired to become curious, confident, socially attuned, independent thinkers who go on to be happy and successful in 21st century society. We want our pupils to excel academically but also to expand their horizons and we are absolutely committed to providing them with a great many enriching opportunities outside of the classroom. In doing so, we will be recruiting, retaining, motivating and developing the very best teachers so that school is enjoyable and lessons impactful. People make a school, so recruiting staff who share our high expectations, going the extra mile for our pupils, is at the top of my priorities.

Schools are wonderful places, they spring into life each morning with a tremendous amount of energy and I hope that the pupils at The High School Leckhampton will feel eager to come to school, to participate, and that they will be inspired by their expert teachers, their interesting curriculum, and the variety of enriching opportunities provided for them. Our pupils will have access to wonderful facilities, both in our new building at Balcarras and our superb location at Farm Lane from 2022.

I hope that you share our vision and aspirations for The High School Leckhampton. I am very much looking forward to working with The Balcarras Trust and the local community to shape our plans and create a wonderful school ready to welcome our first cohort in 2021.
