First World War Reenactor
On Monday 15th January, HEARTS Fortnight got underway with Year 9s welcoming into school a First World War reenactor.
Paul spent an hour with each of the History classes, talking to them about the experience of soldiers in the trenches on the Western Front, and allowing each student to handle a wide variety of objects including shrapnel helmets, webbing, boots, trench digging tools and other kit. In each session Paul asked for volunteers, and each time the students responded enthusiastically, in true HSL style! Those chosen took up the opportunity to wear some of the uniform of a British soldier during the War, whilst others tried on a range of gas mask to show how technology evolved over the four-year period in response to new types of warfare.
Year 9 will use this knowledge in their History lessons in the next few weeks, as we continue to study the events and impact of the First World War.
Our thanks to Paul, from Guarderobe, for bringing his excellent knowledge and superb range of artefacts, and for sharing his time with some of the students in his lunchbreak.
